Overview

V-Connect is a volunteer management platform built to replace fragmented spreadsheets and email threads across the nonprofit sector. The core challenge: design a system flexible enough for wildly different organizational structures, while keeping the experience simple enough for first-time volunteers.

Problem

Nonprofits were losing potential volunteers at the registration step — forms were too long, expectations were unclear, and follow-up was inconsistent. Staff spent 4–6 hours per week on coordination tasks that should be automated.

Process

We ran stakeholder interviews across three nonprofits before touching any wireframes. The recurring theme: coordinators needed visibility, not features. That insight reframed the information architecture entirely — shifting from a volunteer-centric flow to a coordinator-first dashboard with self-serve volunteer onboarding.

Architecture decisions

  • Single source of truth for volunteer profiles, shared across org accounts
  • Role-based access so coordinators only see their org’s data
  • SMS-first notification design (many volunteers didn’t use email reliably)

Outcome

Shipped v1 in 8 months. 12 nonprofits onboarded at launch, volunteer registration time dropped from ~18 minutes to ~7. Coordinator overhead reduced by roughly 60%.
